Writing an admission essay for grad school is a truly challenging task. If you’re vying for the limited slot, you should do your best to stand out. Here are a few preparatory steps that should be adhered to, if you want to turn in an essay that stands a good chance of being noticed by the screening officers:

Research about the program and school

The admission essay is not just about yourself, your skills and ambitions, but how you can fit in with the academic community of the school. This is oftentimes not taken into consideration by applicants that they fail to customize their personal statements based on the school standards and requirements. So before you go on writing your draft, first gather information about the application requirements, school programs, as well as the mission and vision of the school.

Do the SWOT analysis

How can your essay be a reflection of yourself if you don’t know anything about yourself? It will do you good to perform the SWOT analysis before your proceed with the writing task. Ask yourself–what are my strengths and weaknesses? What are the opportunities out there for me? Are there threats to my personal growth and progress? These will give you an idea what to explore and what relevant information to include about yourself. With this, your essay will come out as written by someone who is sure about him or herself.

Create an outline for your Essay

If your outline is not well done to start with, do not expect to have a good graduate admission essay. The outline serves as the paper’s general guide. This can be presented in a diagram or point-by-point format. Your outline should have a thesis statemen , main ideas, sub-topics, and other supporting details. Have a focused discussion on the main topic and avoid adding irrelevant information on your personal statement.
